NC Foothills Geocoin - Bronze
The very active NC Foothills Geocachers organization started in 2004 under the name Charlotte Geocachers. Within a year 90% of their members were from other parts of central North Carolina; so in May 2005 they changed the name to NC Foothills representing the beautiful geography of this entire region. They started with 10 core members and now have over 100 members. The original 10 members are still active in the group. The NC Foothills participate in both Geocaching and Terracaching. If you would like to see them in Terracaching, you can visit them in the Western NC Terracaching Consortium.
The organization is very involved with their community, and they have even adopted the entire 22 parks belonging to the City of Hickory Parks and Recreation district. You are welcome to participate in their quarterly Cache In Trash Out events held in these parks or at any of several other areas in the surrounding counties. They also have monthly "meet and eats" that do not involve caching at all, just hanging out with friends and having a good time.
The first coins they had minted were in 2006 and again in 2007. They used the proceeds from those coins to fund the food at their monthly meetings and CITO events; however, the administration, handling of orders, and shipping proved to be quite an undertaking for the rapidly growing interest geocachers had for the coins. In 2008 they decided to take advantage of the CoinsAndPins.com pre-sale program allowing the organization members to be freed up for more important matters such as organizing their next several CITO events and monthly meetings, and it helped greatly to make their coins much more affordable for their group.
This coin was designed by LRC91 of Conover, NC. His and a few other's designs were submitted in December and voted on by NC Foothills members in January 2008. This coin is loaded with colors and has a very unique twist on the compass color pattern.
